"Stressed Gums: Unveiling the Impact of Stress on Periodontal Health"
In our daily life hassle, being stressed under minor conditions has become very common to each one of us. Well, some amount of stress is definitely managed. But will you be surprised if I tell you that just as stress has various effects on your overall health, so does it have on your oral health.
Psychologic conditions, particularly psychosocial stresses have been considered to be a risk factor in causing periodontal disease. The etiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease is based on many other factors too, though the contribution of stress cannot be ignored.
Several clinical studies and systematic reviews of the subject have indicated a positive relationship of chronic stress with periodontal disease. It is found that chronic stress could lead to changes in daily habits such as ignoring oral hygiene, clenching, grinding, smoking as well as physiologic changes such as decreased saliva flow and suppression of the immune system. Likewise individuals who are under stress may be less likely to seek professional care.
Psychosocial stress also has a great influence on the outcome of periodontal therapy during treatment. Stress impairs the inflammatory response and thus delays healing, making it all the more painful. The influence of suppressed immunity causes various systematic health issues like cardiovascular disorders, endocrinal disorders, CNS disorders.
Although stress may predispose an individual to periodontal disease, the presence of oral microbial flora remains an essential etiologic factor in causing periodontal disease. Stress cannot alone lead to periodontitis in absence of periodontal pathogen.
Thus one should practice some of the following habits to be stress free and have a happy healthy life.
